Read โHaiti occupies a unique and troubling position in the global education landscape. Despite being located just a short flight from the United States, the country faces educational challenges that rival those of the most disadvantaged nations on earth.
According to UNICEF and UNESCO, Haiti has some of the lowest educational indicators in the Western Hemisphere. Approximately 500,000 children of primary school age are not enrolled in any educational institution. Adult literacy rates hover around 60%, meaning that roughly four in ten Haitian adults cannot read or write. These statistics are not abstract numbers โ they represent millions of people whose potential is being constrained by a lack of educational opportunity.
Haiti's education system operates under extraordinary pressure. The catastrophic earthquake of 2010 destroyed or severely damaged more than 4,000 schools across the country. While international aid helped rebuild some of these facilities, many communities are still waiting for their schools to be restored more than a decade later.
Beyond infrastructure, the system faces chronic teacher shortages. A significant proportion of Haiti's teachers have received no formal pedagogical training. Class sizes are often overwhelming, with one teacher responsible for 50, 60, or even more students in a single room.
Education is widely recognized as one of the most powerful tools for economic development and social stability. When children receive a quality education, they are more likely to earn higher incomes, contribute to their communities, and raise healthier families. The benefits cascade across generations โ an educated mother is significantly more likely to send her own children to school, creating a virtuous cycle of human development.
The challenges facing Haiti's education system, while severe, are not insurmountable. Targeted investments in school infrastructure, teacher training, and educational materials can produce significant results. Organizations like Serply are demonstrating that community-driven approaches can create sustainable improvements in education access and quality. Your donation or volunteer contribution is part of that effort.
As we reflect on the past year, the Serply team is proud to share an honest update on our progress. 2025 has been a year of meaningful milestones, valuable lessons, and strengthened commitment to our mission.
Our school construction program reached a significant milestone with the completion and handover of our first school in Haiti. This facility now serves as a learning space for children under 15 in the local community. The school was built in partnership with community members who took ownership of its ongoing management.
Our Teacher Professional Development program trained a total of 48 teachers across multiple communities. Feedback has been consistently positive, with teachers reporting improved confidence and better student engagement.
We plan to begin needs assessments for our next school construction project, expand teacher training to reach more communities, develop digital literacy and parent engagement programs, and publish our first comprehensive annual report. We are grateful to every supporter who made 2025 possible. Join us for 2026.
You do not need to be in Haiti to make a difference in a child's education. In today's connected world, there are many meaningful ways to support educational initiatives from wherever you are.
The most direct way to support education is through a financial donation. Even modest contributions have significant impact โ $25 provides school supplies for five students, while $100 funds training materials for a teacher. When choosing an organization to support, look for transparency in how funds are used, a clear mission, evidence of real activity, and proper nonprofit registration.
Many education nonprofits need skilled volunteers who can contribute from a distance. Common remote opportunities include:
Sometimes the most impactful thing you can do is tell someone about a cause you care about. Share information about global education challenges. Post about organizations you support. Every new person who learns about our work is a potential supporter, volunteer, or advocate for children's education.
